Another experimental paint job from 1980 is modeled by SD40R 7342 (and SP caboose #1 in the background). This original version (SD45R 7399 was the only other unit to be so painted) was special in that the hood lettering was red on this side and white on the other and the "bloody nose" was solid on one side and had wings on the other. |

The "Galloping Ghost," as I refered to it, is in the process of being repainted into the experimental Caltrain paint scheme. Even in the early eighties, it was possible to paint a locomotive out-of-doors in the Bay Area...couldn't do that today! |

SP U33C 8599 sits in the Diesel Shop at West Oakland on October 1, 1983. 8599 was rebuilt by SP and GE in 1981 as a last ditch attempt to deal with the over 200 U33C's on the SP's roster, many of which had been leased to Mexico or fallen apart in heavy SP service.
